This would be an enormous advantage. It would allow expresses to operate alongside freight.

Compare this to the Hope Valley between Dore and Chinley, where there are NO places for overtaking apart from maybe at the junction to Hope Cement Works.Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11727622151908182041noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8399779909998407922.post-84433283825824264752008-12-21T15:20:00.000+00:002008-12-21T15:20:00.000+00:00Here in south central Manchester we have had many ...Here in south central Manchester we have had many lines closed. Already in place within the localities infrastructure, complete with cuttings, access and bridges, anyone with any common sense knows that turning these old lines into cycle tracks (muggers / crime tracks) was tantamount to insanity. It is irreversible neo-retro transport madness. The same goes for Woodhead. It is there, it is not broken, it needs to be used positively as it was intended - not regressed to suit the needs of fat cat energy company bosses. Anyway, surely if the tunnel was REALLY needed - it's not, though, because they are already using the other two Victorian tunnels - couldn't some engineering genius find some way of incorporating a few power cables into the existing space?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8399779909998407922.post-11340321441647099182008-07-12T10:36:00.000+01:002008-07-12T10:36:00.000+01:00I only found out about this during an archaeology ...I only found out about this during an archaeology essay I'm writing on Deepcar. It's horrible to think more government stupidity could rid us of this once important rail link.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8399779909998407922.post-27041201629606884032008-03-21T12:38:00.000+00:002008-03-21T12:38:00.000+00:00The Woodhead Tunnel should be kept open for possib...The Woodhead Tunnel should be kept open for possible future high speed electrified rail travel. I'm sure the National Grid could temporarily reroute cables through the main tunnel whilst they renovate the old tunnels for their cables, it may cost more money for the NG but think of the publicity and praise they would receive in undertaking this action all of which would be beneficial to them in the long run.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8399779909998407922.post-5379722552121637152008-03-06T18:16:00.000+00:002008-03-06T18:16:00.000+00:00I cannot believe only 1200+ people have signed the...I cannot believe only 1200+ people have signed the petition to re-open the Woodhead line - Britain's 1st electrified mainline railway and only one to be closed!

The 1200+ demonstrates peoples ill regard for transport issues. And ranks as non-sensically as people complaining about the price of petrol but still queuing up to buy it.

In 1999 a transport white paper mooted £180 billion's worth of transport improvement. Including restored rail links like Woodhead. I think about 50p of it has actually been spent on railways.

I think the truth is you only get a new rail link by campaigning if you live in a marginal parliamentary seat. Elsewhere, the government seem obsessed with doing nothing that benefits working class people because they aren't the marginal voters. In fact, they refuse to acknowledge a working class still exist.Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15374686651401645711noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8399779909998407922.post-7827292001982384932008-02-03T17:31:00.000+00:002008-02-03T17:31:00.000+00:00Ruth Kelly is being dragged down the garden path b...Ruth Kelly is being dragged down the garden path by the DfT and National Grid Plc.

Anyone fancy doing a FOI request to find out how much National Grid paid for the new tunnel (Sold of course by the Residuary BRB under instructions of the DfT!).
